I saw a speedrunner do it much faster with the squirt gun, but I didn't want to take chances. In my winning run, I'd acquired the secret flamethrower item (only available on level 22, and only if you'd gotten a key on level 15), which took care of the giant spider form (though a weed whacker and plenty of medkits will do the job), and used my store of five monster potions for the remaining giant head stages. The final boss fight has five stages, and can be a nightmare if you're unequipped. The most difficult part is setting aside the three hours you'll need, and dealing with the stress of knowing that you could have an instant game over at any time if you run out of victims. Employed properly, the medkits are essentially extra lives, and I went into the final stage with eight of them. You get used to what weapons are best for what monsters (ancient artifacts for vampires, and if you're out of silverware, freezing a werewolf with a fire extinguisher leaves it open to instant death from the weed whacker) and when to use your specialty items (Pandora's Box is great for giant babies, and I once killed three Snakeoids with a single monster potion). It's not exactly intuitive that starting from level one would be easier, especially when extra lives are few and far between, but once you've got enough practice in, it's actually not that hard. Though the passwords can be useful for practicing the later stages, if you really want to finish this game, you've gotta set aside a few hours and do it from the beginning, and, eventually, after many frustrating attempts starting from various points, that's what I did.

The final password you get starts you on level 45, and beating the game from there would be nearly impossible. If you use a password, you start off with only your basic squirt gun (with 150 rounds of holy water) and a single medkit. Every four levels you get a password, but using said password can be problematic.īesides saving the victims, your most important objective in each stage is the gathering of weapons and items. You start with three lives, no continues, and there are 48 levels (plus hidden bonus stages). Every 40,000 points, you get a neighbor back, but if you lose them all, the game is over, even if you have lives remaining. You start with 10 neighbors (or 'victims'), and if you lose any, you start the next level with fewer, not unlike Missile Command's bases. Once you find the last one, an exit door opens in front of you and you can move on. Your objective is not necessarily to kill the monsters, some of which spawn infinitely, but to rescue the neighbors. It's a run-and-gun style game, viewed from a top-down perspective. So this was my chance to put that right, though even with decades more gaming experience, it remained quite a challenge. I'm not sure I even saw the second half of the game.

I loved exploring the different levels, looking for secrets and uncovering hidden bonus objectives (You can destroy the UFO? Awesome!), but I don't think I ever came close to finishing it.
